The following books are classic texts for teaching global issues and global awareness.

World Studies 8 - 13: A Teacher's Handbook

This excellent teacher's handbook introduces the field of "world studies" - an approach to teaching which promotes the knowledge, attitudes and skills relevant to living responsibly in our multicultural world. The book's 3 sections comprise (1) Curriculum Planning (an introduction to world studies, teaching approaches, aims and objectives); (2) Classroom Activities - 80 innovative activities grouped into chapters entitled "Here is the World" (global awareness), "Getting on with Others" (conflict, cooperation, sex roles), "Other Worlds" (learning about peoples, cultures, minorities, wealth and poverty) and "The World Tomorrow" (visions of the future, acting for change); (3) In-Service Ideas (suggestions for global education teacher training workshops).

Global Teacher, Global Learner

This definitive UK text gives a comprehensive outline of the theory and practice of global education, along with an extensive range of stimulating classroom activities for primary and secondary students. The book's 4 parts comprise: (1) The Global Learner (an introduction to global issues, learning for the 21st century and global education); (2) The Global Classroom (guidelines for global education teaching plus a rich variety of self-esteem activities, discussion activities, experiential activities, role plays and simulations); (3) The Global Curriculum (ideas for integrating global education into subjects across the school curriculum); (4) The Global Teacher (teacher training workshop ideas for developing 'global teachers').

This extensive US handbook provides a step by step guide to the process of designing global education courses and programs. The book is divided into 4 parts: (1) Getting Started (an overview and rationale for global education); (2) Foundational Steps (clarifying the mission, goals and essential elements of global education); (3) Developing a Master Plan (setting global education program priorities, learning objectives and curriculum design); and (4) Supporting the Process (obtaining resources and building school support). Readers will come away with a solid understanding of global education and a commitment to educating for world citizenship.

Worldways: Bringing the World into the Classroom

This U.S. activity book serves as an excellent introduction to global education theory and practice. It begins with a rationale for global education, lists 76 classroom activities that promote global awareness, includes a resource section listing global education books, teaching materials and organizations, and ends with a 12-part appendix including global education teaching guidelines, a chart showing how the book's activities relate to subjects across the school curriculum and a list of national days of the world's countries. Activities profiled include a global issues opinion poll, discovering the world in our classroom, a student-designed classroom declaration of human rights, world flag activities and a "Meet the Press" student role play of world leaders.
