The 2nd Oita English Language Seminar

Date and Time:
Sunday, 17 April 2011 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Speaker:
Various

Oita JALT is proud to co-sponsor the 2nd Oita English Language Teaching Seminar. This is the second such event to be held in Oita and will be held in collaboration with Oki-NET and Pearson Kirihara KK. There will be 7 presentations focusing on teaching English to students in elementary school, junior and senior high school, and college/university, as well as adult TESOL classes. Information on each presenter and presentation is below:

Tristan Scholze
(Rainbow Bridges / University of Kitakyushu)
"Writing for Children"

Why bother with writing for young children? And if you do, how can you make writing more fun and effective? We’ll look at some very appealing possibilities with writing, including how to coordinate it with your language targets and what it means to make it achievable. We’ll start with pre-writing and progress through phonics, words, and full sentences and beyond.

 Meg Takemura
(Pearson Kirihara)
"Taking a walk along Story Street - A Path to Early Literacy"

Do you have any students who have basic phonetic knowledge and good
understanding of oral language yet read text laboriously? The
development of Japanese children's reading fluency does not come easily,
so what can teachers do to help their students improve their reading
skills in English? How can we help them start reading for themselves? In
this presentation, you will experience some practical reading activity
ideas. Let's take a walk along Story Street and discover the joys of
reading.

Simon Goddard Weedon (E English School / The Daily Yomiuri). "Does Grammar exist? Alternative approaches to understanding the role of grammar in language learning and alternative methods for teaching grammar in class"

Kazuya Yamamoto (Oita Fuzoku Elementary School) & Ed Kellerman (Oita Fuzoku Elementary School / Albion English School)

Scott Aubrey (Risumeikan APU) “Improving student interaction in the classroom”

Reporting on a small study as well as using past language learning research, the presenter will outline factors which influence students’ willingness to communicate in an English language classroom. Various classrom factors, which can be easily manipulated by the teacher, largely predict student participation and interaction levels in English language classrooms. In addition, students who are more “internationally oriented” tend to be more likely to communicate in class using English. Suggestions will be made on how teachers can focus on these factors facilitating willingness to communicate in order to create an environment where students voluntarily engage in meaningful interaction. Successful examples of classroom activities and tasks will be shared.

Scott Aubrey is a junior lecturer at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University where he teaches Fundamental and Intermediate English classes. Scott is interested in L2 motivation, among other things.

Monica Hamciuc (Risumeikan APU) “Project based learning - A case study”

The Intermediate English I course at APU taught between 2008 and 2010 was a skill- based, language output oriented course, focused on a variety of English speaking and writing skills. Three main spoken tests were used as oral assessments for the course, of which the last one was a group discussion test. The purpose of the module leading up to this test was to improve group communication at the same time as awareness regarding environment issues and PBL seemed to offer a solution for both. This presentation will show how PBL was introduced into the classroom, outcomes and remaining issues.

Monica Hamciuc is an English lecturer in the Center for Language education at APU. Her interests include curriculum development, teacher and learner motivation and language material development.

Antoinette Jones & Warren McDonald (Ritsumeikan APU) “Language beat: Using music to enhance language learning”

Antoinette Jones is a junior lecturer in the Center for Language Education at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. Her research interests include neurolinguistics, texts and technology, and intercultural studies. Some of the courses she has taught are intermediate English, advanced English, intermediate and advanced writing, intermediate and advanced grammar, intermediate reading, intermediate listening, and pronunciation.

Warren McDonald is a Junior Lecturer in the Center for Language Education at Ristumeikan Asia Pacific University. He teaches at the intermediate and advanced levels and has had a primary focus on improving writing skills. Having studied classical guitar at the University of Victoria in Canada, Warren has an ongoing interest in how music may play a role in language learning.

There will also be a materials display from Pearson Kirihara KK, a Book Shop provided by Little Monsters ELT Books and a coffee shop too! This promises to be Oita's biggest English Language Teaching event of the year so please make a note in your diary. We hope you will be able to join us!

Teacher Awareness Through Peer Observation

Date and Time:
Saturday, 15 January 2011 - 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Speaker:
Christopher Stillwell

Our first event of 2011 will be a workshop held by Christopher Stillwell from Sojo University, Kumamoto. Christopher will discuss teacher awareness through peer observation. More specifically, how teachers are typically isolated from one another in their classrooms, but are fortunate in that they have a valuable and free resource in their midst- other teachers. This workshop will explore guidelines for tapping into this resource through peer observation and coaching. The workshop will also provide examples of how a voluntary peer mentoring program can create opportunities for teachers to benefit from the insights of peers while at the same time experiencing the challenges of giving and receiving feedback. This workshop should be of value to anyone interested in collaborative professional development, peer/teacher observation, and techniques for giving feedback effectively in all contexts of teaching and learning. We hope you will be able to join us!

Teaching and learning English humour, in principle and practice

Sunday, 14 November 2010 - 1:00pm - 2:45pm
Speaker:
Richard Hodson

We are pleased to have Richard Hodson, a lecturer in the Faculty of Global Communication at the University of Nagasaki Siebold and a Best of JALT 2009 recipient, come to Oita to give a special lecture about how to use humour in the classroom. First, he will explore the key pedagogical and cultural issues that need to be considered when introducing humorous materials in the EFL classroom, including insights both from humour theory, and from recent ELT research. In the second half of the presentation he will describe, and report results from, two recent research projects. This is a useful presentation for any English teacher in the area.
